What to Do Before Your Surgery

A practical checklist of everything to prepare before walking into the operating room.

What to Do Before Your Surgery

Surgery is a short journey, but it deserves thoughtful preparation. The better prepared you are, the smoother the recovery and the better the result. This guide distils what surgeons actually expect from patients before a procedure.

Two weeks before surgery

  • Disclose everything you take — prescription medications, supplements, herbs. Some natural products (gingko, fish oil) increase bleeding risk.
  • Stop smoking — even two weeks helps wound healing noticeably.
  • Reduce alcohol if applicable.
  • Stabilise chronic conditions — diabetes and hypertension must be controlled.
  • Plan your recovery — who will drive you home? Do you need time off work?

One week before

  • Stick to the approved medication list your surgeon gave you.
  • Get enough rest — deep sleep boosts immunity.
  • Eat a balanced, protein-rich diet to fuel healing.
  • Prepare your home — remove trip hazards, set up a comfy recovery spot.
  • Stock up early — medications, loose clothing, extra pillows.

The day before

  • Follow fasting instructions precisely — usually no food or drink after midnight. This is essential for anesthesia safety.
  • Shower with antibacterial soap if the surgical team prescribes one.
  • Remove all jewellery and nail polish — they can interfere with monitoring equipment.
  • Pack loose, comfortable clothing for after surgery.
  • Bring with you: ID, insurance card, medication list, any medical devices (glasses, hearing aids).

On surgery day

When you arrive:

  1. Registration — about 10–15 minutes.
  2. Anesthesia consultation — discuss the type of anesthesia and your questions.
  3. Informed consent — ask anything before you sign.
  4. Pre-op prep room — vitals check, IV cannula.
  5. Transfer to the operating room — with the full team.

Right after surgery

  • You'll wake up in recovery under nursing supervision.
  • Some dizziness or nausea is normal after anesthesia.
  • Ask for pain relief as soon as you feel discomfort — no need to wait.
  • Don't try to sit up or walk alone the first time.

Common questions

Can I take my medication on the morning of surgery?
It depends on the drug. Ask the anesthesia team 24 hours in advance. Permitted medications are usually taken with a small sip of water.

How long will I stay in hospital?
It varies by procedure — from a few hours (laparoscopic) to several days (major surgery).

When can I return to work?
Your surgeon will tell you. Usually 1–3 weeks.

Final checklist before leaving home

  • [ ] National ID / Iqama
  • [ ] Insurance card
  • [ ] List of all medications and supplements
  • [ ] Emergency contact number
  • [ ] Loose clothing and comfortable shoes
  • [ ] Basic personal items (charger, toothbrush)

A note from the team

"The difference between a smooth surgical experience and a hard one usually lives in the preparation — not in the procedure itself. Spend a week on mental and physical readiness; you'll feel the difference."
— Dr. Saud Al-Otaibi, Consultant General Surgery
